Description

For sample adults and sample children with health insurance plan coverage reassigned from public (either state sponsored health plan or other government program) to private insurance coverage (HIPRIVATEE, PREASSGNFL), PUBPRVPREM indicates if there is an enrollment fee or premium for the plan that has been reassigned from public to private or not. Prior to 2019, PUBPRVPREM was asked of all persons.

Prior to 2019, family respondents were asked to identify the kind of health insurance coverage each family member had by choosing from a list of health insurance coverage types. Respondents were then asked to provide the name of their family members' health insurance plan. In cases where respondents indicated plan or program names that were clearly a different kind of health insurance coverage than originally reported, these persons were reassigned to the appropriate enrollment recodes.

Comparability

Comparability may be affected by the 2019 questionnaire redesign. The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
