Codes and Frequencies
Description
For male sample adults aged 40 years and older who ever had a PSA test (PSAEV), PSALY reports the main reason for the respondent's most recent PSA test.
The survey form from 2000 and 2003 directed interviewers to show respondents a flashcard for this question. On the flashcard was written:
The flashcard was not used for this question in the 2005 and later surveys.
In the Field Representative's Manual for 2005 and 2008, a routine physical exam was defined as, "...a regular physical examination (such as an annual exam) that was not scheduled because of a specific problem."
For more information, please see PSAEV.
Comparability
Apart from the use of a flashcard with the response categories in earlier surveys and the 2019 questionnaire redesign, there are no comparability issues. The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
