Description

For sample adults and sample children with a second private health insurance plan (HIPRIVATEE, HIPRIVATE, HIMEDIGAP), PRVEXCHG2 reports if the person's second private health insurance plan the person had was obtained through an exchange company, exchange plan, or exchange portal. Prior to 2019, PRVEXCHG2 included all persons.

This variable is an internal NHIS recode of verbatim plan names provided by respondents who indicated they had obtained exchange-based coverage. For more information on NHIS exchange variable recoding procedures, please refer to their "Rules for Evaluating and Assigning Exchange-Based Coverage."

Comparability

Comparability may be affected by the 2019 questionnaire redesign. The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content.
