Description

For sample adults and sample children with private health insurance (HIPRIVATEE) who initially indicated private health insurance (i.e., who were not recoded from public to private coverage (PREASSGNFL)), PRVEXCHG1 indicates the type of company used to obtain their first private health insurance plan.

Prior to 2019, PRVEXCHG1 was asked of all persons who had at least one person in their family covered by private health insurance.

This variable is an internal NCHS recode of verbatim plan names provided by respondents who indicated they had obtained exchange-based private coverage. For more information on NCHS exchange variable recoding procedures, please refer to "Rules for Evaluating and Assigning Exchange-Based Coverage."

Comparability

Comparability may be affected by the 2019 questionnaire redesign. The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content.
