The response category "unknown" includes a relatively small number of cases that were unknown plus several hundred cases that were blank. Blanks were partially completed sample adult interviews, and most of the cases were in the "sample adult is able to respond" category rather than "physical or mental condition prohibits responding" category. The number of partially completed interviews and the number of blanks on PROXYSA is higher in 2005 due to the Cancer supplement that was appended to the sample adult interview.
