Description

For sample persons age 40 and over who have heard of a proctoscopic exam and have had a proctoscopic exam in the past 3 years because of a health problem, PROCWHYOTH reports if the health problem was a problem other than bleeding, pain, constipation, bowel trouble, blood in stool, or an unrelated medical problem.

For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.

Comparability

Apart from changes in the universe, this variable is mostly comparable over time. Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IHIS weights.

Slight changes in the response categories may also affect comparability. For 1987, the response category "unrelated medical problem" was listed on the card, whereas for 1992 the category was deleted.
