Description

For sample persons age 40 and over who have heard of a proctoscopic exam and have had a proctoscopic exam in the past 3 years because of a health problem, PROCWHYBLOOD reports if the health problem was blood in stool.

Comparability

Apart from changes in the universe, this variable is mostly comparable over time. Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IHIS weights.

Universe

  • 1987: Half of sample persons age 40+ (excluded from CAEP) who have heard of proctoscopic exam and have had exam in the past 3 years because of health problem.
  • 1992: Half of sample persons age 40+ in quarters 1 and 2 and in 2 weeks of quarter 3 (excluded from CAEP supplement) who have heard of a proctoscopic exam, have had a proctoscopic exam, whose most recent exam was in past 3 years, and whose reason for last exam was because of a specific health problem.
