Those who reported ever receiving such a diagnosis were asked a follow-up question about whether they had poor circulation in their legs during the past 12 months (POORCIRCYR).

The survey documentation for 2002 and 2007 did not elaborate on this condition. The question may have been intended to identify problems such as Peripheral Vascular Disease, which causes poor blood circulation to the feet and legs. Symptoms include leg numbness or weakness, sores that will not heal, and muscle pain or cramping. Common causes of poor circulation in the legs include atherosclerosis, in which fatty deposits within the artery walls reduce blood flow, and diabetes.
