Description
For sample adults age 18 and over who have ever smoked a pipe at least 50 times in their entire life, PIPE1STAGE provides the age when the respondent first started using a pipe.
The Field Representative's Manual noted that if the question arises, interviewers should include pipe tobacco only, and cigarette or cigars crumbled into pipes should not be counted.

- 1987: Half of sample persons age 18+ (excluded from CAEP supplement) who ever smoked a pipe at least 50 times.
