Codes and Frequencies
Description
For sample adults who ate pie in the past year, PIESIZ reports the portion size consumed each time the respondent ate pie. A medium portion was defined as 1 medium slice. In 1987 and 1992 sample persons were asked about the frequency and portion sizes of pie, as well as other baked goods, including doughnuts, cookies, cake, or pastry. To improve comparability, the frequency responses were recoded into a single variable that reports how many times per year the respondent consumed any type of baked good (SWEETSYR). To determine the proportion of pie (or inversely other baked goods) to total baked goods, please see PIEYR, which reports the number of times the respondent consumed pie in one year. PIESIZ corresponds only to the portion size of pie; to see the portion size of other baked goods, please see PASTRYSIZ.
PIESIZ is part of a series of variables initiated in 1987 related to food, food knowledge, and cancer. For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.
