Description
For half of female sample persons age 18 and older who have had a Pap smear exam but did not know the exact date, PAPL35YR reports grouped time since her Pap test. The variable categorized the time into different time groups.

Comparability
Female sample persons from 1987 who knew their last Pap smear was within the past year were not included in the universe, while those persons were included in the universe in 1992. Those persons not included in the 1987 universe because they knew their last Pap smear was within the past year were included in PAPL1YR. Additionally, response categories differ between 1987 and 1992 in the numbers of banded years.
Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the information was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IHIS weights.
Universe
- 1987: Half of female sample persons age 18+ (excluded from CAEP supplement) who have ever heard of a pap smear test, have ever had a pap smear but don't know exact date of test but had it 1+ years ago.
- 1992: Half of female sample persons age 18+ in quarters 1 and 2, and in 2 weeks of quarter 3 (excluded from CAEP supplement) who ever had a Pap smear exam and month of last exam was NA AND year of last exam was refused/unknown/not ascertained or 1989 and date of last exam (number) is REF/NA/DK.
