Comparability

Prior to 2019, this variable is comparable apart from changes in universe. From 1997-2010, sample adults who worked during the previous week were in universe. From 2011-2018, the universe for this variable was expanded to include sample adults who were with a job or business but were not at work, were working, but not for pay, at a family-owned job or business the previous week, or those who had ever worked. Beginning in 2019, the universe for this variable was sample adults age 18 and over who were working last week or who were not working last week because they were temporarily absent, or who performed seasonal or contract work or who worked at a job or business but not for pay.

The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
