Description
For sample persons who are of Hispanic origin, NATORIGIN reports the respondent's ethnic identification.
Comparability
Prior to 1987, this question was asked of all persons and there were more response categories. Beginning in 1987, a series of questions about national origin and cultural engagement were asked of individuals of Hispanic origin. Data users should carefully review the question and response categories before making comparisons before and after 1987.
Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
