Description

For persons aged 2 and older in 1983, persons in 1986 who had not lost all of their teeth, persons in 1989 who had not lost all of their teeth and who used mouthwash in the past 2 weeks, and sample persons in 1998 who used mouthwash in the past 2 weeks, MWASHFLOR reports if the mouthwash that the person used at home contained fluoride.

Comparability

In 1983 and 1986, a single question was asked to determine whether the sample person used a mouthwash that contained fluoride. In 1989 and 1998, this single question was split into two separate questions. The first question served as a screening question to identify persons who used mouthwash at home. The second question asked if the person's mouthwash contained fluoride.

Changes in universe may affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
