Description

For sample persons ages 18-44, MJDEPENDYR is a recoded variable that reports if the person ever had a dependence on marijuana. This recoded variable is based on responses to other questions about marijuana use, including: using marijuana more often than planned in the past year; trying, but being unable to cut down or stop using marijuana in the past year; using marijuana daily for two weeks or more in the past year; experiencing social consequences of marijuana use in the past year; reducing usual activities because of marijuana in the past year; continuing to use marijuana despite problems in the past year; building up a tolerance to marijuana in the past year; feeling sick because of stopping or cutting down on marijuana in the past year; and, using alcohol because of feeling sick after stopping or cutting down on marijuana in the past year. Persons who reported not using marijuana in a previous question are recorded as responding "no".
This variable is part of a series of questions on drug and alcohol use. Sample persons filled this survey supplement out themselves because of the potentially personal nature of the questions included in the supplement. The interviewer was available to provide assistance if requested. The supplement includes detailed questions about cocaine (COKABUSEYR) and marijuana (MJABUSEYR), and general questions about use of hallucinogens, inhalants, heroin, painkillers, sedatives, stimulants, and tranquilizers.
