Description

For sample adults who consumed 2% milk in the past year, MILK2PSIZ reports the portion size consumed each time the respondent drank 2% milk or drinks made with 2% milk. A medium portion was defined as 8 ounces. Respondents were instructed not to include milk on cereal. In 1987 and 1992 sample persons were asked about the frequency and portion sizes of different types of milk they consumed in the past year. To improve comparability, the frequency responses were recoded into a single variable that reports how many times the respondent consumed any type of milk, per year (MILKYR). For the type of milk most consumed, see MILKTYPE. MILK2PSIZ corresponds only to the portion size of 2% milk consumed, not other types of milk.

MILK2PSIZ is part of a series of variables initiated in 1987 related to food, food knowledge, and cancer. For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.

Comparability

Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IHIS weights.
