Description
For sample female adults ages 18 to 55 (and for sample female children ages 10 to 17, beginning in 2007), MENSTYR reports whether the person had any menstrual problems in the past 12 months, including heavy bleeding, bothersome cramping, or pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS).
MENSTYR was first introduced in 2002. For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function or drop-down menus.
Comparability
Changes in the universe compromise comparability over time. In 2002, this question was only asked of sample female adults ages 18 to 55. In 2007, it was also asked of sample female children ages 10 to 17. Researchers wishing to make comparisons across years should restrict the analytic sample to adults. As always, data users are reminded to use the prescribed IHIS weights in their analyses.
