Description

For sample persons aged 18 and over, MDSMASK2 reports whether, during the last check-up, the doctor asked the respondent about smoking cigarettes or using other forms of tobacco.

MDSMASK2 is one of a series of variables dealing with doctor advice. For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.

Comparability

There are changes in the sampling universe between years, so researchers should use caution in making comparisons over time. Please refer to the Universe Tab for detailed information. Apart from this change in universe, there are no comparability issues.

Universe

  • 1991: Sample persons age 18+ who ever had routine physical or for whom it was unknown if they ever had a routine physical.
  • 1993: Half of sample persons age 18+ in quarters 3 and 4 (excluded from AIDS supplement) who ever had a routine physical.
  • 1994: Half of sample persons age 18+ (excluded from AIDS supplement) who had a physical exam within the past 3 years.
  • 1998: Sample adults age 18+ who had physical exam within past 3 years.
