Description

For sample persons aged 65 and over who have had a routine check-up, MDSELFCASK reports whether, during the last check-up, the doctor asked the respondent if he or she had difficulty taking care of himself or herself, including dressing, using the toilet, bathing, eating, or getting around inside the home without help.

MDSELFCASK is one of a series of variables dealing with doctor advice. For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.

Comparability

There are changes in the sampling universe between years, so researchers should use caution in making comparisons over time. Please refer to the Universe Tab for detailed information. Apart from this change in universe, there are no comparability issues.
