Description

For sample adults and children in 2012 who had ever used massage (MASEV) but had either not seen a practitioner for massage in the past 12 months or had never seen a practitioner for massage, MASUSEYR reports whether they used massage in the past 12 months.

Massage was one of many alternative health treatment modalities included in the Alternative Health Supplements.

Definitions 

The 2012 Field Representative's Manual defines massage as:

Massage manipulates muscle and connective tissue to enhance function of those tissues and promote relaxation and wellbeing.

Field representatives were advised to "feel free to offer [this definition] even if the respondent has not requested [it]."
