Description

For sample adults, MARGSIZ reports the respondent's average portion size (small, medium, or large) when eating margarine in a specified time period. This includes margarine on bread, rolls, or vegetables. Respondents were asked separately about butter consumption. A medium portion was defined as two pats. Researchers may wish to use MARGSIZ in conjunction with MARGNO, which reports the frequency with which the respondent ate margarine, and MACTP, which reports the corresponding time unit.

MARGSIZ is part of a series of variables initiated in 1987 related to food, food knowledge, and cancer. For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.

Comparability

Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IHIS weights.
