Description

For female sample persons who have ever heard of a mammogram and have had a mammogram in the past 3 years because of a health problem or a specific breast problem, MAMLYSWELL reports the problem for her most recent mammogram was swelling.

Related variable MAMYEVSWELL (1987 only) reports whether female sample persons aged 40 and over who have ever had a mammogram because of a health problem had that mammogram because of swelling.

Please use the IPUMS NHIS drop down menu and search functions for related variables.

Comparability

Apart from changes in the universe, there are no comparability issues. Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the information was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IHIS weights.
