Description

For sample adults 18+, LANGHOMEOT reports whether a language other than English is being spoken at home.

Respondents who reported that they spoke a language other than English at home were then asked an additional set of questions, including questions related to the following variables:

LANGHOMESPA "What other language do you speak most often at home?" (Specifying only Spanish or other.)
LANGNEWS "When you watch television, read news online or in print, or listen to the radio, which language do you use most often?"
LANGDOC "When you see a doctor or other health care professional, which language do you use most often?"
LANGSOC "When you participate in social activities, such as visiting friends, attending clubs and meetings, or going to parties, which language do you use most often?"

Questions about language other than English at home were added as emerging content in the second quarter of the 2023 NHIS. Users should adjust sampling weights to account for partial availability. For guidance on adjusting weights, please see the sampling weights user note.
