For all persons, LAHLPOUTNB reports if the person needed the help of another person in getting around outside of his or her neighborhood because of a disability or health problem.

Please note: IPUMS NHIS response code 9 (Unknown) was coded in original NHIS statistical files as "No." However, this coding is inconsistent with the 1977 Final Tape Records that indicate a value of Unknown. In addition, the small number of respondents with this code was judged by IHIS to be consistent with a value of Unknown. However, the actual disposition of this small number of respondents is not known with certainty.
