Description
For sample adults who had "any symptoms of pain, aching, or stiffness in or around a joint" (excluding the neck and back) during the past 30 days (JNTMO), JNTPAINRATE reports how respondents rated their joint pain for the past 30 days. To elicit this information, interviewers said the following:
The Field Representative's Manual for 2006 stressed that respondents "should be instructed to think only about their joint pain DURING THE PAST 30 DAYS when answering this question."
Comparability
Users should note a change in universe in the related variable (JNTMO) starting in 2019 (see Universe tab for details). In addition to changes in universe, the NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. Universe
- 2002-2003; 2006; 2009: Sample adults age 18+ who have had any symptoms of pain, aching, or stiffness in or around a joint during the past 30 days.
- 2019; 2023: Sample adults age 18+ who were ever told they had arthritis or related condition (ARTHGLUPEV), and who have had any symptoms of pain, aching, or stiffness in or around a joint during the past 30 days (JNTMO).
