Description
For all injury/poisoning episodes that occurred in the past 3 months for persons who were aged 4 years or older (and were students at the time of the injury beginning in 2004), IRSCHMISS reports whether or not the person missed school as a result of this injury or poisoning. Please see the Comparability tab for information about changes in the universe for this variable.
IRSCHMISS is an injury-level variable.
IRSCHMISS is part of a series of variables initiated in 1997 that systematically report persons' injuries and poisonings, the cause, what the person was doing while sustaining the injury or poisoning, and where she/he was at the time of the injury or poisoning. For related variables and additional information, please see the User Note on Injuries and Poisonings or use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.
Comparability
Prior to 2000, persons were asked about injuries and poisonings separately. To improve comparability across samples, IHIS integrated all episode level data as a single record type. Episodes that were originally released by NHIS in the poisoning files for 1997-1999 can be identified using the variable IRPOISYN.
Prior to 2004, this variable included all injury/poisoning episodes and offered a response category for "Not a student at the time". Beginning in 2004 persons were instead asked a screener question about student status (IRIPSTU) and the universe was restricted to episodes experienced by persons who were students at the time of the injury/poisoning episode.

- 1997-2003: Injury and poisoning episodes of persons older than 4 years of age.
- 2004-2017: Injury and poisoning episodes of persons older than 4 years of age who were students at the time of the injury.
