Description
In 2010, for sample adults aged 18 years or older who worked at some point in the past 12 months, and whose current or most recent main job was not the job they held the longest, INDSLH1 reports the 2-digit detailed industry recode for the sample adult's longest-held job. Beginning in 2015, INDSLH1 reports the 2-digit detailed industry recode for the sample adult's longest held job for sample adults aged 18 years and older whose current, main job is not their longest held.
In 2010, the industry code is based on the 2007 version of the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) and, beginning in 2015, the industry code is based on the 2012 version of the NAICS. INDSLH1 is part of the NHIS Occupational Health Supplement.
All original industry codes are available in IND. For more information on all of the industrial schemes that were used in previous NHIS surveys, please refer to the "User Note on Occupation and Industry Variables". Please see the "Universe" tab for more detailed information on changes in the universe across survey samples.
Please see the Comparability and Universe tabs for more information on how this variable was constructed.
Analysts may be interested in viewing the variables INDSLH2, OCCUPLH1 and OCCUPLH2, which contain information regarding the sample adult's industry codes and detailed occupation codes in regards to their longest-held job.
Comparability
There are slight changes in the universe over time that may affect comparability. Specifically, in 2010, the universe retains sample adults age 18 and older who are not currently employed but who have worked in the past 12 months. In 2015, the universe excludes those sample adults who are not currently employed. To compare the two years, analysts may want to limit their analyses to sample adults aged 18+ who are currently employed and whose current, main job is not their longest held.
