Description
For sample persons or adults who were ever told they have high blood pressure, HYPMEDEV reports if medicine was ever prescribed by a doctor to lower blood pressure.
Comparability
Apart from changes in the universe, there are no comparability issues. Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
Universe
- 1974: Sample persons age 17+ who have ever been told by a doctor that they had high blood pressure or hypertension.
- 1985; 1990: Sample persons age 18+ who have ever been told they had high blood pressure not related to pregnancy and who are not now taking medication for high blood pressure (or for whom it was unknown whether they were now taking medication for high blood pressure).
- 1991: Sample persons age 18+ who have ever been told they had high blood pressure or borderline high blood pressure (not related to pregnancy) or for whom it was unknown whether they had high blood pressure.
- 1993: Half of sample persons age 18+ in quarters 3 and 4 (excluded from AIDS supplement) who have ever been told they had high blood pressure or borderline high blood pressure (not related to pregnancy) or for whom it was unknown whether they had high blood pressure.
- 1994: Half of sample persons age 18+ (excluded from AIDS supplement) who have ever been told they had high blood pressure or borderline high blood pressure (not related to pregnancy) or for whom it was unknown whether they had high blood pressure.
- 1998; 2003: Sample adults age 18+ who were ever told they had high blood pressure not related to pregnancy (or for whom it was unknown whether their high blood pressure was pregnancy-related).
- 1999 2015 2016 2017 2018: Sample adults age 18+ who were ever told they had high blood pressure.
- 2008: Sample adults 18+ who were ever told they had high blood pressure that was not related to pregnancy or Ref/DK if high blood pressure was pregnancy related.
