Description
HYPLEVEL reports the level of blood pressure at the person's last check: low, normal, borderline, or high.
Comparability
Apart from changes in the universe, this variable is mostly comparable over time. Slight changes in the response categories may also affect comparability. For 1974, 1985, and 1990, the response category "borderline" level was not listed.
Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
Universe
- 1974: Sample persons age 17+ who ever had their blood pressure taken.
- 1985; 1991: Sample persons age 18+ who did not report having never had their blood pressure taken when asked the duration since their last blood pressure check.
- 1989: Persons age 18+ with confirmed diabetes.
- 1990: Sample persons age 18+ who have ever had their blood pressure taken and knew the duration since their last blood pressure check.
- 1993: Half of sample persons age 18+ in quarters 3 and 4 (excluded from AIDS supplement) who did not report having never had their blood pressure taken when asked the duration since their last blood pressure check.
- 1994: Half of sample persons age 18+ (excluded from AIDS supplement) who did not report having never had their blood pressure taken when asked the duration since their last blood pressure check.
- 1998: Sample adults age 18+ who did not report having never had their blood pressure taken when asked the duration since their last blood pressure check.
- 1999: Sample adults age 18+ who were ever told they had high blood pressure and knew the duration since their last blood pressure check.
- 2003: Sample adults age 18+ who have ever had their blood pressure taken and knew the duration since their last blood pressure check.
- 2008; 2014; 2017: Sample adults 18+ who have had their blood pressure checked some days/weeks/months/years ago.
