Description

HRTELLNOIS reports whether the sample person can tell one kind of noise from another.

The universe for this question was different for 1971 than from 1977, but the substantive nature of this difference is not large. In 1971, this question was asked to sample persons aged 3 or older who are deaf in one or both ears, or have any trouble hearing with one or both ears, or use hearing aids. In 1977, it was asked of sample persons aged 3 and older with hearing problems who cannot hear and understand whispers, normal voices, shouts, and loud speaking in his/her better ear, and can't tell the sound of speech from other sounds and noises

This variable is part of the Hearing Supplement, which provides unique information on hearing conditions. For related variables and more information about these supplements, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.
