Description

For sample persons who are deaf in one or both ears, or have trouble hearing with one or both ears, or use a hearing aid, HRCBIRTHOR indicates whether the cause of hearing problems was present at birth for a reason other than those already mentioned, excluding other infectious diseases.

Reasons for hearing problems present at birth that were already mentioned include: mother had German measles (rubella) during pregnancy; a genetic reason; an infectious disease such as measles or meningitis; an ear injury; an ear surgery; loud noise from gunfire, blasts, or explosion; other noise from machinery, aircraft, power tools, loud music, appliances, Walkman personal ; or getting older.
