Description
For sample adults ages 55 and over in 1984 and ages 65 and over in 1986, HOMGT1FLOR indicates whether the respondent's dwelling has more than one floor or level. Basements and step-down living areas are counted as separate levels. Field representatives were instructed to mark units that were obviously multi-level as such without asking, but not to assume that a unit was single-level without asking.
HOMGT1FLOR was first introduced in 1984 as part of the Study on Aging supplement. For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function or drop-down menus.
Comparability
Changes in the universe reduce comparability over time. In 1984 the universe for HOMGT1FLOR is sample persons age 55 and older, in 1986 the universe contracts to include only those sample persons age 65 and older. Researchers wishing to compare the two years should restrict the sample to sample persons age 65 and older.
