Description

For persons with a private insurance plan that covers someone outside the family roster (i.e., generally outside of the household), HIP1EXSPOUT reports that the person outside the family roster is a former spouse of the policy holder.

The family roster includes all household members related to the reference person.

Most households in the NHIS contain only one family. However, some households will contain more than one family. For the NHIS, a "family" is defined as all household members related to each other by blood, marriage, or adoption, including foster
relationships and unmarried (opposite or same sex) partners.

The NHIS provides data for the first two private insurance plans reported. Individuals with more than two private plans have a "2" reported for the variable HIPRIVGT2.

This variable can be used to monitor the effects of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
