Description

For persons with at least one private insurance plan paid for by an employer or union, HIP1EMPAYPRM reports how much the employer or union pays for the premium for the first plan.

Private health insurance is any type of is any type of health insurance, including Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), other than Medicare, Medicaid, SCHIP (State Children's Health Insurance Program), Military Health Care, Indian Health Service, a State-sponsored health plan, some other government program and single service plans.

Private insurance plans may be provided in part or full by the person's employer or union or may be purchased directly by an individual.

The NHIS provides data for the first two private insurance plans reported. Individuals with more than two private plans have a "2" reported for the variable HIPRIVGT2.

This variable can be used to monitor the effects of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
