Description

For persons who lost health insurance coverage due to or during a job loss or layoff in the past 12 months, HINOJOBYMO indicates the length of time in months did not have any other (private) health insurance coverage. Individuals may have had coverage through public programs.

Comparability

Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.

Universe

  • 1983: Persons in quarters 3 and 4 who EITHER, because of job layoffs or job losses, lost health insurance coverage that had been carried through their job, OR for anytime during the job layoffs or job losses was without any type of health insurance coverage (excluding health care programs such as Medicaid, AFDC and military benefit programs).
  • 1984: Persons who EITHER, because of job layoffs or job losses, lost health insurance coverage that had been carried through their job, OR for anytime during the job layoffs or job losses was without any type of health insurance coverage (excluding health care programs such as Medicaid, AFDC and military benefit programs).
  • 1986; 1989: Persons who, in the past 12 months, were without any type of health insurance coverage at any time during their job(s) layoff or loss.
