Description

For all respondents who indicated they or a family member had at least one private insurance plan, this recoded variable indicates whether the person was covered by the fourth plan mentioned, any other plan, or no plan. Respondents did not have to be covered by the plan to provide information about the plan. Information was collected on up to four plans per family; the related variables HI1PCOVR, HI2PCOVR, and HI3PCOVR are also available.

Private health insurance was defined as a comprehensive health plan designed to pay all or part of hospital, doctor's, surgeon's, or dentist's bill, or other medical expenses. Plans that paid only for accidents or single service plans were not considered to be private health insurance (plans which paid extra cash for hospital stays were considered to be health insurance for 1992).
