Description

For sample children ages 12 to 17, HEALTHPROV indicates if they have a personal health care provider. In 2012, HEALTHPROV was available for adults ages 18 and older and sample children ages 4 and older who reported having a usual place they go for healthcare when they are sick or need advice about health. The following definition of a personal health care provider is provided in the 2012 survey documentation for this question: "A personal health care provider is a health professional who knows you well and is familiar with your health history. This can be a general doctor, a specialist doctor, a nurse practitioner, a physician's assistant, or another type of provider."

Starting in 2021, the wording of the question was changed from using the phrase “personal health care provider” to "personal doctor or nurse." However, the definition of "personal doctor or nurse" in the 2021 field manual is identical to the definition of a "personal health care provider" above:

Comparability

Comparability may be affected by the 2019 questionnaire redesign. The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content.
