Description

For sample persons, HAVEPCP reports whether the respondent usually saw one particular doctor at the usual place for care.

HAVEPCP is a variable dealing with access to care. For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.

Comparability

The universe changes across samples, including sample persons under 18 with a usual place of care that is not a doctor's office or private clinic in 1988, and instead including sample persons ages 18 and older with a usual place of care in 1990. The survey question was modified to in 1990 to ask specifically about a particular doctor that the respondent usually saw, rather than the previously used generic term "medical person". . Universe

  • 1988: Sample persons under age 18 who have usual place for sick care and the place reported is not doctor's office or private clinic.
  • 1990: Sample persons age 18+ who have a regular source of medical care.
