Description

For persons ages 14 and older who received public assistance income last month, GOTWELFAFDC indicates if the assistance was Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC), some other type of assistance payments, or both.

Comparability

In 1993, this question was only asked in quarters 3 and 4. Changes in collection times affect raw frequencies but do not affect comparability across samples. As always, data users should use prescribed weights. Other than changes in sample collection, there are no comparability issues with this variable.

Universe

  • 1990-1992: All persons who received public assistance income last month.
  • 1993: All persons in quarters 3 and 4 who received public assistance income last month and who did not live in a single or married-couple family with more than $20,000 in annual family income
  • 1994-1996: All persons who received public assistance income last month and who did not live in a single or married-couple family with more than $20,000 in annual family income
