Description

For all persons, and, in 1981, sample person under age 18, GOTSSINOW indicates if the person currently receives Supplemental Security Income (SSI). From 1978 to 1986, respondents were reminded that SSI comes on a gold-colored check. From 1991 to 1996, respondents were reminded that SSI comes in a blue colored envelope or is automatically deposited in the bank.

Comparability

In 1981, this question was only asked of sample persons under age 18. Data users should apply appropriate filters before comparing data from 1981 to other years.

For all other years, this question was asked of all persons. In 1983 and 1993, the question was asked only during quarters 3 and 4. Changes in collection times affect raw frequencies but do not affect comparability across samples. As always, data users should use prescribed weights.
