For all persons (except in 1981), GOTSSI indicates if the person received Supplemental Security Income (SSI) at the time of the interview (1978 to 1989), during the month prior to the interview (1990 to 1996), and during the previous calendar year (1997 onward). If necessary, respondents were given the following description of SSI: "Federal SSI checks are either automatically deposited in a bank or mailed to arrive on the first of every month".

From 1990 to 1996, GOTSS is part of the Family Resources supplement that provides information on individuals' health benefits, amount of coverage and income received from employment, welfare benefits, public assistance, and savings. Starting in 1997, this variable is part of the core person questionnaires.
Questions in the Family Resources supplement are different from those in the core survey in terms of the content and the treatment of missing data. Missing data in the Family Resources supplement were imputed by NHIS. Users can refer to the imputation flag variable GOTSSIFLAG to identify persons with imputed data.
