Description

For all persons in 1990-1992 and persons in 1993-1996 who received public assistance income last month and who did not live in a single or married-couple family with more than $20,000 in annual family income, GOTAFDCFLAG indicates person whose information on the type of public assistance that he/she received last month (GOTAFDCPROG) was imputed.

GOTAFDCFLAG is part of the Family Resources supplement that provides information on individuals' health benefits, amount of coverage and income received from employment, welfare benefits, public assistance, and savings during the month prior to the interview. Unlike the core survey, all missing data in this supplement were imputed by NHIS.

Comparability

Changes in the universe in 1993-1996 affect the raw frequency of this variable but should not affect comparability. As always, users should use the appropriate weight for their analyses.

Universe

  • 1990-1992: All persons
  • 1993: All persons in quarters 3 and 4 who received public assistance income last month and who did not live in a single or married-couple family with more than $20,000 in annual family income
  • 1994-1996: All persons who received public assistance income last month and who did not live in a single or married-couple family with more than $20,000 in annual family income
