Description
GLAUCOMAYR indicates whether the sample adult had glaucoma during the past 12 months.
In 1999 and 2002, sample adults were asked whether they had ever been told by a doctor or other health professional that they had glaucoma (GLAUCOMAEV). Only those who gave an affirmative answer to this question in 2002 were asked whether they had glaucoma in the past 12 months.
The Field Representative's Manual for 2002 defined glaucoma as "an increase in pressure in the eye which causes damage. If not treated soon enough, glaucoma can destroy side vision, leaving a small area in the center where the person still sees." This definition was not routinely shared with respondents.
