After asking the question, "Do you believe that getting a genetic test for cancer risk has or will affect your health insurance coverage?" the survey form directed interviewers to read if necessary, "Effects include losing your health insurance coverage or not being eligible for health insurance if you change jobs or move."

GENTHINS was included in a section of the 2000, 2005 and 2010 Cancer Control Module dedicated to questions on genetic testing. Interviewers began this part of the survey by reading the following statement:

The 2010 Field Representative's Manual states that, "Genetic testing for cancer risk means testing the blood to determine if an individual carries genes which may predict a greater chance of developing cancer at some point in their lifetime."
