Description
For sample adults aged 18 and older, GENTCANEV indicates whether the respondent ever had a genetic test for cancer risk.
[show more]After asking, "Have you ever HAD a genetic test to determine if you are at greater risk of developing cancer in the FUTURE?" the survey form directed the interviewer to read if necessary, "This does not include any test to see whether you had cancer in the PAST or have cancer NOW."
GENTCANEV was included in a section of the 2000, 2005 and 2010 Cancer Control Module dedicated to questions on genetic testing. Interviewers began this part of the survey by reading the following statement:
The 2000 and 2005 Field Representative's Manual defines genetic testing as:
The 2010 Field Representative's Manual states that, "Genetic testing for cancer risk means testing the blood to determine if an individual carries genes which may predict a greater chance of developing cancer at some point in their lifetime."
Comparability
Changes in the universe may limit comparability between the 2015 and earlier samples. In 2000, 2005, and 2010, this question was asked of sample adults who indicated that they had heard of testing for cancer risk (GENTCANHR). Beginning in 2015, this question was asked of all sample adults.
