Description
For sample adults who had ever heard of genetic testing for cancer risk (GENTCANHR), and who had ever had a genetic test to determine the risk of developing cancer in the future (GENTCANEV), GENCOUNT reports the number of genetic tests the respondent reported.
[show more]GENCOUNT is a summary recode of affirmative responses to the following questions:
- Was the most recent genetic test for breast cancer risk? (GENTBCAN)
- Was the most recent genetic test for ovarian cancer risk? (GENTOVCAN)
- Was the most recent genetic test for colon/rectal cancer risk? (GENTCOLCAN)
- Was the most recent genetic test for another type of cancer risk? (GENTOTHCAN)
Respondents were coded as "0 - No test specified" to "4 - Four tests specified" based on the number of source variables (GENTBCAN, GENTOVCAN, GENTCOLCAN, GENTOTHCAN) to which they answered "yes."
All of these variables are included in a section of the 2000 Cancer Control Module dedicated to questions on genetic testing. Interviewers began this part of the survey by reading the following statement:
