Description

For sample persons age 18 and older who ever had gallstones or gallbladder trouble that was medically diagnosed, GBTESTUPGI indicates if she/he ever had an upper GI series to help diagnose the gallstones or gallbladder condition. Interviewers were instructed to read the following, if necessary: "For an upper GI series you drink a chalky white liquid called barium, and then X-rays are taken."

This variable is part of the 1989 Digestive Disorders supplement, fielded to provide data on the nature and prevalence of symptoms attributed to disorders of the lower digestive tract in the adult population. The data provide prevalence estimates on certain common digestive disorders and complaints.
