Description
For sample adults, GADCDC reports results for a summary measure that allows researchers to calculate the likelihood a respondent met the diagnostic criteria (i.e., psychiatric caseness) for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). GADCDC is an IPUMS NHIS-created variable that summarizes responses given to the series of questions making up the NHIS version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview - Short Form (CIDI-SF) for generalized anxiety disorder. Apart from the value of 9 for persons not asked these questions, GADCDC has a value of 0 (not probable psychiatric caseness) or 1 (probable psychiatric caseness).

As explained in greater detail in the variable description for WOR1MO, the CIDI-SF instrument for generalized anxiety discorder began with a series of screening questions that determined whether respondents qualified for a second round of questioning on symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder. In the NHIS version of the survey instrument, only respondents who acknowledged feeling worried, tense, or anxious most of the time, or worrying more than most people would, for at least 6 months, were asked about specific symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder. Those who did not pass the screening questions received a score of 0 in GADCDC.
Respondents who passed the screening questions and answered the symptom questions received a score of 1 (indicating probable psychiatric caseness) only if three sets of criteria were met:
