Description
For sample persons age 18 and older who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes, but haven't smoked for at least the past 30 days, FSQUITNO reports how many times the person stopped smoking for one day or longer. Comparability
The question wording changed slightly between years. In 1992, the question asked how many times the person stopped smoking for one day or longer. In 2000, the question was "how many times did you stop smoking for one day or longer BECAUSE YOU WERE TRYING TO QUIT SMOKING."
Minor changes in the universe between years impact the comparability of the data across time. Users should be cognizant of these changes and interpret their results accordingly.
Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
Universe
- 1992: Half of sample persons age 18+ in quarters 1 and 2, and in 2 weeks of quarter 3 (excluded from CAEP supplement) who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes, have ever smoked every day for at least 6 months, and either do not currently smoke or currently smoke some days but haven't smoked in the past 30 days.
- 2000: Sample adults age 18+ who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes and do not currently smoke.
