Description

For sample persons age 18 and older who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes, but haven't smoked for at least the past 30 days, FSQUITNO reports how many times the person stopped smoking for one day or longer. Please see the Universe tab for detailed information regarding who was asked this question. Please see the Comparability tab for information on changes in question wording between years.

Comparability

The question wording changed slightly between years. In 1992, the question asked how many times the person stopped smoking for one day or longer. In 2000, the question was "how many times did you stop smoking for one day or longer BECAUSE YOU WERE TRYING TO QUIT SMOKING."

Minor changes in the universe between years impact the comparability of the data across time. Users should be cognizant of these changes and interpret their results accordingly.

Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
