Description

For sample adults who made lasting and major changes in what they eat or drink for health reasons, FOODLESS1 reports the first food item the respondent mentioned eating less of as part of these changes. Lasting and major changes were specified to include changes to prevent a disease or changes made after being diagnosed as having a disease, but does not include temporary changes made during a limited period.

FOODLESS1 is part of a series of variables initiated in 1987 related to food, food knowledge, and cancer. For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus or see DIETCHANGEV.

Comparability

Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IHIS weights.
